Packers training camp preview: Who are the newcomers to 90-man roster in 2024? (2024)

The Green Bay Packers added 28 new players to the 90-man roster since the end of the 2023 season.

Who are all these newcomers coming to training camp? The Packers made 11 draft picks, signed or claimed eight veterans or first-year players and signed or claimed nine undrafted free agents.

No. 2: K Greg Joseph

How acquired: Signed as free agent (Vikings)

The Vikings kicker each of the last three seasons, Joseph arrives in Green Bay as veteran competition for Anders Carlson, the incumbent kicker who struggled down the stretch of his rookie season. Joseph, 29, has made 82.6 percent of his career field goal attempts in the NFL.

No. 8: RB Josh Jacobs

How acquired: Signed as free agent (Raiders)

Jacobs is taking Aaron Jones’ job as the No. 1 running back and Sean Clifford’s No. 8 uniform number. A first-round pick in 2018 and the NFL’s rushing champion in 2022, Jacobs is one of the NFL’s 10 best runners. The Packers believe he’ll be a dynamic threat on the ground and through the air.

How acquired: Claimed off waivers (Lions)

Turner, an undrafted rookie out of Michigan, will compete with Anders Carlson and Greg Joseph at kicker. In his final collegiate season, Turner made 85.7 percent of his field goals and 65 of his 66 extra point attempts for the national champions. The Lions waived him after signing All-UFL kicker Jake Bates.

No. 17: QB Michael Pratt

How acquired: Seventh-round draft pick (Tulane)

Pratt, a four-year starter at Tulane, set school records for passing yards, completion percentage, touchdown passes and passing efficiency. He threw at least 20 touchdown passes and fewer than 10 interceptions in all four seasons, and he improved his completion percentage each season. Can he challenge Sean Clifford for the No. 2 quarterback job behind Jordan Love?

No. 19: WR Dimitri Stanley

How acquired: Signed as undrafted free agent (Iowa State)

Stanley signed in May as an undrafted free agent. Over two seasons at Iowa State, he caught 48 passes for 559 yards and four scores. Stanley has experience playing out of the slot and returning punts. His best bet to sticking in Green Bay might be the practice squad in 2024.

No. 20: S Javon Bullard

How acquired: Second-round draft pick (Georgia)

Bullard could be a Week 1 starter next to Xavier McKinney at safety. He’s tough and versatile, with big-time hitting ability and experience playing in the slot and as a deep safety.

No. 27: S Kitan Oladapo

How acquired: Fifth-round draft pick (Oregon State)

Big, tough, run-stuffing safety with the potential to be a nickel linebacker if needed. Dealt with a broken toe suffered during the combine and missed the entire offseason workout program while recovering from surgery. Oladapo will begin the summer on the non-football injury list.

No. 29: S Xavier McKinney

How acquired: Signed as free agent (Giants)

The jewel of the Packers’ free agent class. McKinney was one of the NFL’s best safeties in 2023 and could be a perfect fit as a multidimensional defensive back in Jeff Hafley’s scheme. Everyone in the building has raved about McKinney’s ability as a player and leader so far.

How acquired: Third-round draft pick (USC)

Lloyd led South Carolina in rushing in 2022 and then led USC in 2023. The 220-pounder is big and fast, with dynamic tackle-breaking ability. The Packers think he can be a weapon as a receiver, too. It’s possible he’ll win the job as the top backup behind Josh Jacobs during camp.

How acquired: Fourth-round draft pick (Oregon)

Experienced collegiate safety who played in 52 career games across four seasons at Fresno State and one at Oregon. Played all over the defense at both stops. Made more big tackles than any player on Oregon’s defense in 2023. Possible impact special teamer early on.

How acquired: Seventh-round draft pick (Penn State)

King was an All-American after a dominant and highly productive 2022 season, but he took a big step back in 2023 and fell to the seventh round. Can the Packers get his football career back on the right track? Perimeter and slot potential at cornerback. Lack of straight line speed could keep him inside.

How acquired: Signed as undrafted free agent (Alcorn State)

Howard rushed for 2,048 yards and 19 scores over 22 games during his final two seasons at Alcorn State. He was a first-team All-SWAC each season. Good size at 6-0 and 215 pounds.

How acquired: Signed as free agent (Giants)

An undrafted free agent out of Michigan, Green spent time on the Giants practice squad in 2023. Made 24 starts for the Wolverines and was a All-Big Ten pick in 2022.

Massive tight end prospect at 6-7 and 259 pounds. Caught 21 passes over his final two seasons at Arizona State. Practice squad candidate if he has a strong summer.

How acquired: Signed as undrafted free agent (Washington)

USC transfer played in 15 games for Washington in 2023. Produced 37 tackles, four tackles for loss, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery for the Huskies.

How acquired: Signed as undrafted free agent (Wisconsin)

Experienced long snapper who was tabbed as one of the best at his position in the 2024 draft class. Bowden should provide legitimate competition for Matt Orzech during camp.

How acquired: Signed as free agent (Bears)

Alexandre signed a futures contract in January. Undrafted out of Pitt in 2023, Alexandre spent time with the Bears in 2023. He produced 29.5 tackles for loss and 16 sacks while at Pitt (58 games). The Jets originally signed him as an undrafted free agent.

One of the top linebackers in college football in 2023. Had 17.0 tackles for loss and 8.0 sacks for Texas A&M. Can he win a starting job at linebacker as a rookie? Cooper and Quay Walker could be a dynamic duo.

Athletic and versatile, with experience at four different positions — just how the Packers like their offensive linemen. Likely backup at center and guard as a rookie. He’s an explosive mover.

Undrafted free agent out of North Dakota State in 2023 who spent time with the 49ers practice squad last year. Played defensive end at 6-5 and almost 300 pounds but could have inside-out potential for the Packers 4-3 front.

Over 49 games at NIU, Ester delivered 20 tackles for loss and nine sacks. Two-time team MVP and two-time All-MAC pick. Defensive tackle prospect at 6-3 and 289 pounds.

Hulking left tackle prospect who might do best moving inside to guard. Terrific blend of experience and athleticism. While undrafted, Jennings has a shot to make the 53-man roster as a developmental backup.

Former first-round pick with starting experience at left and right tackle. Never developed fully while with the Eagles and struggled last season with the Titans. Can the Packers get him over the hump? Potential swing tackle/Yosh Nijman replacement.

How acquired: First-round draft pick (Arizona)

The Packers see Morgan, a three-year starter at left tackle, as a four-position player along the offensive line. Lacking arm length but is well proportioned and an elite athlete for his size. Could be a potential starter at left tackle or right guard coming out of training camp.

Massive offensive tackle prospect who played a lot of games at left tackle for Georgia State and then impressed during the Senior Bowl. Packers have gravitated towards bigger and bigger offensive tackles.

At Albany, Hicks caught 72 passes for 1,139 yards and 17 touchdowns. Good size and athleticism at 6-2 and 201 pounds. Developmental potential but stuck in a deep position group.
